Definition of Tetanus Disease, Symptoms and Causes

Definition of Tetanus Disease, Symptoms and Causes - Everyone must have suffered injury to the skin. If not cared for and treated properly, the wound has a risk of contamination and infection. One of the possible infections is tetanus. Tetanus disease is a disease caused by a bacterial infection that produces a neurotoxin that attacks the nerve toxin that can create painful muscle contractions primarily of the jaw and neck muscles and can affect the respiratory muscles so it can be life-threatening.

Tetanus Disease Cause
As I was mentioned earlier that cause tetanus is bacterial. The bacteria that causes tetanus is Clostridium tetani which is naturally found in soil, dust and manure. Is a bacterium that can grow and develop only on the environmental situation of the less oxygen (anaerobic).
When these bacteria enter deep cuts (oxygen-poor), bacterial spores can produce a powerful toxin, called tetanospasmin. These toxins will actively interfere with motor neurons, the nerve that controls movement of the human muscle. Toxic effect on motor neurons that causes muscle stiffness and spasms that become major signs and symptoms of tetanus.
Tetanus Disease Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of tetanus may appear anytime from a few days to a few weeks after tetanus-causing bacteria enter the body through wounds. With an average incubation period of seven to eight days new tetanus symptoms appear.
Signs and symptoms of tetanus in order are as follows:
  • Muscle spasms and stiffness in the jaw
  • Followed by stiffness in the neck muscles
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Abdominal muscles become stiff
  • Seizures painful body to a curved spine (epistotonus), lasted for several minutes. These seizures are usually triggered by minor events, such as loud noises, physical touch or light
  • Death can occur due to difficulty in breathing, because the respiratory muscles are not functioning normally.
Signs and symptoms that may accompany tetanus, among others:
  • Fever
  • Sweat
  • High blood pressure
  • Pulse or rapid heart
To diagnose tetanus, the doctor will usually perform a physical examination, including examination of the wound while asking health history, vaccination had ever received, and the symptoms experienced by patients. Step treatment given depends on the patient's vaccination history. If the patient has been vaccinated, the doctor will prescribe tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG) to prevent infection. But if there are patients who have not been vaccinated against tetanus, hospitalization will be required. This treatment usually includes antibiotics, muscle relaxant drugs, and antitoxin. Well, that’s all information about Definition of Tetanus Disease, Symptoms and Causes.
